Michael Slams Labour Incompetence

Lib Dem candidate for Fairfield, Michael Bishopp

Fairfield by-election Lib Dem candidate, Michael Bishopp, has spoken out against the Council Tax and the Labour-controlled Croydon council's inefficiency in collecting it.

"The Labour council's terrible record on financial control means that over £9 million in Council Tax went uncollected in Croydon last year," said Michael.

The council's record makes them the worst council in London for uncollected Council Tax and the second worst in the whole of England.

"Services are facing drastic cuts," said Michael, "If the council were more competent, people could enjoy better services."

The Liberal Democrats have a fairer, costed alternative in the form of a local income tax, which would also be easier to collect. Neither the Tories nor Labour have an alternative scheme, except to delay the inevitable revaluation which the Council Tax demands.

Council Tax revaluation is already overdue in England. In Wales, where revaluation has already taken place, many thousands of thousands of houses were revalued into a higher tax band.
