Croydon's Strategic Planning Committee overlooked residents' concerns when voting in favour of Menta's 55-storey residential skyscraper plans for Cherry Orchard Road. The vote passed by a narrow six to five.
Speaking to the Committee, a packed gallery and overflow room, residents and local, regional and national politicians highlighted the tower's inappropriate location and negative impact on the local community.
The dangerous precedent it would set for development in Croydon was ignored by the Committee who favoured a "bold decision."
Addiscombe Liberal Democrats' survey of 1,000 homes in the East Croydon area earlier this year showed 91 per cent opposed the height of the tower.
Residents submitted nearly 800 objections to the Council prior to the meeting. Residents' group Regenerating East Croydon Communities was formed to fight this threat to the area's character.
Residents' associations and members of all political parties actively opposed Menta's scheme.
Conservative voters particularly feel let down by the six Tory councillors on the committee who voted in a block to support the scheme. One long-standing Conservative voter in Lebanon Road said, "This monstrosity is too high a price, even for much-needed development."
Liberal Democrats are continuing to fight for a better alternative, until such a time as the Mayor of London signs off on it.
