Parking threat thwarted

Addiscombe Lib Dem's campaign against the Conservative council's parking extension plans -- alongside other grass-roots protests -- led to over 1,000 written complaints from Croydon residents.
This action has halted the spread of harsh terms for Controlled Parking Zones across large areas of the borough.
In a major reversal, the council:
- abandoned almost all proposals to extend parking controls from 8am-midnight, 7 days a week
- abandoned the proposal to introduce 24-hour-a-day charging for off-street car parks.
The only area where parking controls will still be extended is around Croydon University Hospital (formerly Mayday).
"This is a victory for fairness for most residents who would have been affected," said campaigner Ejnar Sorensen.
"But we must keep vigilant as the council raises this issue every so often and without giving proper notice of public consultations"
