Liberal Democrats are celebrating electoral success yet again in London. On 21st February, Nancy Jirira won the Fortune Green ward in Camden, gaining over 50 per cent of the vote. Then, on 28th February, the neighbouring Lib Dems in Sutton enjoyed a swing of over 8 per cent in Cheam, coming within 87 votes of taking the previously safe ward from the Tories.
On Camden council, the Lib Dems remain the largest party, whilst in Sutton they continue to enjoy an outright majority.
In the formerly safe ward of Cheam, the Tory vote collapsed by almost 30 per cent while Labour finished in fourth, behind UKIP.
Abigail Lock, councillor in Sutton and GLA candidate for Croydon and Sutton was ecstatic: "A swing like this across the whole of Sutton would reduce the Tories to just 6 councillors in 2 wards. It sets us up for really good result across London in May."
