It may still be cold outside, but spring has sprung for Sir Menzies Campbell. After a keenly-fought campaign, he has been overwhelmingly elected as national leader of the Liberal Democrats.
Sir Menzies pledged that the Lib Debs will "take power from Westminster and Whitehall and give it back to the men and women in our own communities."
Croydon Lib Dems welcomed the result: "I'm pleased for Ming but delighted for the party," said Coulsdon councillor Ian Atkins, "I'm sure he'll find space for Chris and Simon as part of rejuvenated team at Westminster that will really take us forward."
Sir Menzies won 57% of votes in a run-off against his nearest challenger, Chris Huhne. Simon Hughes came a close third.
The new leader will now launch the party's spring conference and the campaigns for local elections in May. After their extraordinary victory at the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election, Lib Dems will have even greater reason for a confident spring in their step.
