Neck and Neck in Fairfield

December 3, 2005 2:16 PM
The number of Tory councillors in Fairfield has declined since 2002. They now have the same number of councillors as the Lib Dems. Labour has no councillors.

The Fairfield by-election is increasingly between Lib Dem Michael Bishopp and the Tory candidate.

With the Lib Dems and Tories each having one councillor in Fairfield, it is a two-horse race to decide who should be the third Fairfield councillor.

Whilst Labour is contesting to be elected on 15th December, they have no councillors in Fairfield, their share of the vote has gone down in every Croydon council by-election since 2002 and they have just lost the parliamentary constituency.

"Only the Lib Dems really want to represent the people of Fairfield," reflects campaign manager Tomas Howard-Jones, "The Tories don't care and Labour is nowhere."

The by-election has been caused by the resignation of one of Fairfield's Tory councillors - the second Tory councillor to do so.
