Labour's double whammy
The 7.2% rise in Council tax and £35 million in cuts announced by Croydon's Labour Council has been attacked by local Liberal Democrats.
"Labour's inflation-busting tax rise and multi-million pound cuts is a real double whammy for residents," said Liberal Democrat Councillor Ian Atkins.
"Residents are still suffering from last year massive tax increases. To be hit with further tax increases and more cuts residents will be in uproar."
"Yet again Labour have shown huge financial incompetence in managing our town's finances."
Liberal Democrat London Assembly Spokesman for Croydon & Sutton, Steven Gauge expressed concern for the ability of pensioners and other residents on fixed incomes to pay the higher taxes.
"Council Tax unfairly hits those on fixed incomes, particularly pensioners. With a tax rise of over 7% many Croydon residents will struggle to pay this."
"The Liberal Democrats would scrap the Council Tax and replace it with a fairer local income tax. This would be based on ability to pay and so would not hit those on fixed incomes."
