Gauge Goes For London Seat

May 18, 2003 5:08 PM

Steven Gauge selected to fight for GLA seatCroydon and Sutton Liberal Democrats have selected Steven Gauge as their prospective candidate for the Greater London Authority election in June 2004.

Steven Gauge (36) lives in Coulsdon with his wife Sue and their 2 children who attend local state primary schools. He has a degree in Psychology from Oxford University and currently works as Head of Policy and Communications for a business support organisation. He also has strong links with Sutton as he attended Devonshire Primary School in Sutton and lived in Carshalton, before moving with his family to Purley.

Steven Gauge has a long record of campaigning for the Liberal Democrats. At the age of 23 years old he was elected as the youngest local councillor on the London Borough of Southwark. He stood as the Parliamentary Candidate for Croydon South constituency in 1997 and in 1998 was the agent in the campaign that secured the Lib Dems first ever seat on Croydon Council. At the last General Election he was the agent who successfully defended the Lib Dems by-election victory in Romsey in Hampshire.

Speaking after his selection Steven Gauge said, "I am really looking forward to the campaign. Last time round we came a strong second place in the Croydon and Sutton constituency and we are well placed to go one better this time and beat the Tories. With the elections for the London Mayor, the European Parliament and the Greater London Authority all on the same day next year it will be great to be part of a really strong Liberal Democrat team for London."

The Greater London Authority has 25 members whose job is to keep an eye on the Mayor for London. 14 of the members are elected from large constituencies across London. The other 11 are elected from a "Top Up" list, designed to ensure that the make up of the GLA fairly represents all the parties support across London. Liberal Democrats currently have 4 members of the Greater London Authority all elected from the London wide "Top-up" list. As well as being the candidate for Croydon and Sutton, Steven Gauge is also number 10 on the Liberal Democrats London wide top up list.
